Language Teacher Appreciation
A language teacher is a special case. In most countries we have at least one foreign language taught within our ordinary schooling. But many of us wish to learn further languages, and very often do so by attending foreign language courses. In this way we meet language teachers and fellow students who seek to learn the same foreign language. These teaching is normally shorter and more relaxed, and it often gives us the opportunity to make friends for life. Do you remember a particular teacher you met in a language academy, or during your stay abroad on a language course? Showing your teacher appreciation will be a wonderful gift, especially considering that these teachers see many groups of students come and go, and they will be happy to realize that they made an impact on you.
Always bear in mind that your language teacher may not even be a professional teacher and that your learning may not have been done formally through one of the cursos de ingles en Nueva York for example. Your “language teacher” could be a friend or flatmate who has helped you get to grips with a new language – they are still sure to appreciate some recognition! Think carefully about how you show your gratitude to your language teacher and if at all possible, try to incorporate a part of the language or culture of the target country into your gesture. It could be you have a favourite French teacher for whom you make a gourmet breakfast of typical croissants and pastries one day or a fun Spanish friend for whom you organise a road trip through Andalucia (these type of holidays are surprisingly cheap using options such as Malaga car rental yet are always guaranteed to provide a special memory for both you and your language mentor). No matter how you choose to demonstrate your language teacher appreciation, do it with feeling! Even the smallest and most simple note of thanks, along with a little effort, can really make someone’s day!
