Smith, Mary
Mary teaches Spanish at West Kirby Grammar School for Girls in West Kirby (Wirral, United Kingdom)
Mary's students are 15-18 years old. This teacher is so special because: Mrs Smith is a very special teacher because she is so passionate for her class to succeed. When I was in her class, being Spanish, she was able to tell us about the country itself from first hand experience; learning about the culture through her story-telling was an inspiration and her enthusiasm for her country rubbed off on all the pupils, making us eager to learn the language. The Spanish department of the school was by far the most fun and they ensured we had a curriculum which was both varied and dynamic - including cinema days, visits to the theatre and meals in Spanish restaurants - so that we always came into the class wanting to learn. As far as I know, many people of the class are still studying Spanish or working in a job which incorporates the language skills we were taught in class. I am working in an “escuela de ingles en Londres” teaching English…Although English is the target language, the majority of my pupils are Spanish and so outside of lessons, it is a pleasure to be able to practise my Spanish with them so not forget what I learnt at school!

Tarpley, Mary Clare
Mary Clare teaches Reading and Language Arts at West Gordon in Valdosta (GA, United States)
Mary Clare's students are 10-12 years old. This teacher is so special because: Mary Clare Tarpley teaches fourth grade at West Grodon Elementary School with the Valdosta City School System in Valdosta, Georgia. Mrs. Tarpley believes that she has success in engaging her students in the process of learning. Mrs. Tarpley reaches out and inspires young people through her teaching approach, positive learning environment, and enthusiasm for what she teaches. Mrs. Tarpley says that although she cannot speak for her students, throughout her 13 years, her students have spoken to her. Her measurement of success is the feedback that she continues to get. Students often reflect on how they looked forward to coming to school and how much they learned from being in her class. They also comment that she is cool and dresses better than any of their other teachers. Mrs. Tarpley is always proud to learn of the impact that her teaching has had on her students’ lives. Mrs. Tarpley is not only highly committed to her students but to the teaching profession as well. She believes that although teaching is a hard job, the personal satisfaction and sense of accomplishment she feels at the end of each day cannot be beaten. She holds a B.S. in Early Childhood Education, a M.S. in Reading Education and an Ed.S. in Elementary Education. She began her teaching career in 1994 as a first grade teacher and has since taught kindergarten, served as a Media Specialist and now teaches fourth grade Reading and Language Arts. She serves as a mentor to Valdosta State University Education students by assisting them in lesson planning and development, as well as the implementation of these lessons. Mrs. Mary Clare Tarpley is active in the community as well as in the classroom. She sponsors the K-Kids Club (a service organization that is a branch of the Kiwanis—a list of their 2006-2007 projects are attached), serves on the Nursery Council at First United Methodist Church, has written numerous grants to assist in purchasing materials for teachers and applied for student scholarships that focus on their participation in community service projects. She serves on a variety of fundraising committees as well as volunteers in her daughter’s classroom at St. John Catholic School. While being a member of the Stone Creek Home and Garden Club she helped host a Tour of Homes which benefited the American Red Cross’ Hurricane Relief, organized a book drive for underprivileged children and collected toys for an annual toy drive. Mrs. Tarpley is a 2 time Co-Captain for a Relay for Life Team that participated in a garage sale event with all of the proceeds being donated to the American Cancer Society. Although it may seem that she is focused on teaching and community service, her biggest goal in life is to be a good wife, mother, daughter, and sister.

Chapman, Cliff
Cliff teaches Mathematics at Halstead Secondary Modern School in Halstead (Essex, United Kingdom)
Cliff's students are 15-18 years old. This teacher is so special because: My favourite teacher from school was my maths teacher, Mr Chapman. Although not an obvious choice, with maths certainly not being a popular subject, Mr Chapman’s class received higher grades than any other class and the fact that he realised many people struggled to both find interest in the subject and complete tasks unaided demonstrated his empathy for students. Teaching maths, he approached the subject in a new, innovative way – relating mathematical problems to real life situations, teaching us about the history behind the subject and giving us a glimpse of the subject at higher levels – which motivated us to work towards being able to do the ‘more interesting’ maths for ourselves.

Williams, Jill
Jill teaches Technology at West Kirby Grammar School in Wirral (Merseyside, United Kingdom)
Jill's students are 10-12 years old. This teacher is so special because: My favourite teacher was Jill Williams who taught Design and Technology in my first year of high school. She was passionate about her subject (and in fact anything to do with design) and was always willing to help students with their projects – no matter how last minute it was! The best thing about her was that she knew her subject so well that her enthusiasm really rubbed off on the students and so even though it wasn’t a traditionally popular subject, the school found her classes had a constantly high attendance and high results. She was also our form teacher and demonstrated real understanding when during the exam period, she bought in a surprise for everyone each day – chocolate, cinema tickets etc, etc.
