What happens when teachers have low salaries?
Education analysts are now saying that increase salaries among teachers all over the glove is a great way to improve the quality of education especially among government-run institutions. This is also one of the best teacher appreciation ideas that the government should listen to. The fact cannot be denied that thousands of schools world wide suffer from poor quality of education because of the following reasons:
1. Moonlighting teachers – There are many reports of teachers moonlighting because their salaries cannot augment the daily expenses of the family. This means they are into some small businesses and jobs in order to earn more. While others view this as a situation that should be understood by school administrators, many parents also complain for lack of quality education. In reality, the teacher’s concentration is being affected when she involves herself in other activities such as having small business. She cannot devote her time on imparting the proper knowledge as her attention is also caught by her small business.
2. Brain drain problem – Many teachers have also decided to shift to working in other countries instead of working in their own country. This is simply because other countries such as US and in Europe offer very tempting salaries and other opportunities. As a result, many government schools also lack teachers nowadays especially in third world countries. This problem should be addressed by the government in these countries before they can see their schools empty with credible and highly educated teachers. In fact, in other countries, there are colleges that already lack educators for adult education.
3. Collect illegal fees – Some teachers who are into massive poverty problems have forced themselves to collect exorbitant fees which sometimes also become the subject of media scrutiny and opinion. This problem is also happening today but the governments in said countries where these events happened have placed a blind eye to the problems simply because they cannot give increase salaries to the teachers. In the US and European countries, this problem has long been addressed. As a result, the quality of education is always attained even in schools operated by the government.
