‘Practice, Practice, Practice!’

A couple years ago, in the first and second year of high school, I had a really cool English and French class teacher. She had been a kinder garden teacher when she was young and now she was in her sixties. Her name was mrs Mountain and she is the one who thought me how to study languages. She let us write down verbs and vocabulary for a thousand times; I can still hear her say ‘practice, practice, practice!!’ (I’ve got notebooks full of: ‘to go, went, gone, to stand, stood, stood, etcetera’). Back then I did not really like it, but today I am grateful to her!! In my opinion there is no other way to learn a modern foreign language than by practising till you know the grammar and words by heart.

If you have problems with learning languages I advise you to study every day a row of 10-30 words by heart. Use pen and paper and write them down. Then examine yourself by covering the translations with a piece of paper. Do the same the other way around. Now, repeat the ones in which you keep making mistakes (this is very important!). Study them every two days for a week or two and I assure you that you will pass your exam successfully and you will never forget the words ever again!
