Teacher associations in the USA

Filed under: Teachers in the US — admin @ 4:57 am

There are organizations created to support teachers and represent them in society so they can get civil and working right. Here you have most important ones in America

Association of American Educators (AAE): Largest United States teachers association. One of their challenges it is to work so the American teachers get the respect, recognition, appreciation and reward they deserve. AAE claims to “help lead a coalition of nearly 300,000 teachers across the country who have joined a non-union teacher association.”

American Federation of Teachers, AFT was founded in 1916 as a labor union and in 2008 represented more than 800,000 teachers and school related personnel. AFT as a partner in the “Campaign for Children’s Health Care” in a press release stated “It is a moral imperative to ensure that all children have adequate healthcare coverage.” Some famous teachers were AFT members as Albert Einstein or Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel.

National Council for the Social Studies was founded in 1922 and it is devoted to support social studies educations. Its members are social studies teachers not only from USA but from 69 different countries.

The Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education (AACE) is a non-profit, international organization. Founded in 1981, headquarters are located in Chesapeake, VA. Its members are all interested in information technology and education.

Music Teachers National Association (or MTNA). This organization with headquarters in Cincinnati has more than 22,000 members. It was founded in 1876 and nowadays it supports programs to assist music students and teachers.

While looking teacher appreciation gift ideas maybe you can contact any of these organizations and they will give you good advice.

the end of teacher appreciation week

Today is the last day of a week full of celebrations. Teacher Appreciation Week is ending and we all had a very special week.

Everyone did their best to express their gratefulness and appreciation towards their favourite teachers and we all made a beautiful week out of it. We will remember this week for a long time. From Monday until Friday, students all over the US surprised their teachers with gifts, songs, performances and “thank you’s”, With Tuesday 4th of April as the absolute highlight.

Teachers are recharged and motivated to give there best for a whole new year. We showed the appreciation that they needed and deserved and now we can go back to giving them headaches and sleepless nights which they will gladly accept. Because they treat us as their children and this week, we have shown that we treat them as our second parents.

So let’s already think about how we are going to surprise our teacher next year, because I know that they will keep on doing the great job that they have done in the past years. That’s why I want to end this week in the best possible way.

A couple of weeks ago, I received this e-mail of a person called Brian Asselin and he told me the following story:
“My name is Brian Asselin, I am a musician living in the Ottawa (Canada) area currently finishing up my education degree at Ottawa University. I came across your website and thought I might drop you a line because I feel one of the biggest reasons why I have chosen to be a teacher myself is because of the continual support I received from my teachers of the past. In fact, I wrote a song dedicated to those teachers who continue to inspire us everyday.”

He also gave me a link to the song and this is the AMAZING result: enjoy

I couldn’t imagine a better closure of a great week filled with joy.

Congratulations, It’s Teacher Appreciation Day

Today, May the 4th has been declared as Teacher Appreciation Day and that is why I want to say congratulations to all the men and women who have dedicated their lives to engaging and teaching young minds. They all deserve appreciation for the difficult job they have by managing, teaching and educating all these children.

It is necessary to recognize the work en dedication of these educators by saying thank you, giving a gift or rewarding the many excellent teachers in schools. No-one will ever forget the influence that one or more great teachers had on our decisions and our lives. So it is also important to be grateful for the teachers who influence our children’s lives.

So I say thank you those teachers who have influenced our lives, thank you to those teachers who have influenced our children’s lives, thank you to those teachers who keep on trying, thank you to those teachers who never give up, thank you to those teachers who educate the economy of tomorrow, thank you to Teacher Appreciation Day for remembering me how grateful I am.

Why do we blame teachers?

Filed under: Teacher Appreciation,Teachers,Teachers in the US — admin @ 7:19 am

“When did teachers become the betes noir of public education? Why are they getting all the blame for America’s public education failings? Everywhere you look, people are piling on teachers as if they are at the root of all that is bad in our public education system. Even President Obama has gotten in the act, supporting the mass firing of teachers at a Rhode Island school that has been deemed ‘failing’.” Dr. Jim Taylor

We all know that there are some problems with public education in America. And these problems are spreading towards more countries in the world. But since when does everyone concider the teachers and schools to be the problem of this failure? We all know that they are not the reason for the failure of the children.  So why do we blame them? Maybe we should search for the reasons in our own society instead of blaming others.

You hear people from everywhere saying that teachers are responsible for poor test results of children, lagging education standards and the growing information gap between different students. But do you really think that these people who educate children in poorly performing schools have fun in doing so? According to me, nobody likes working late, giving extra courses, preparing lessons, correcting terrible tests,… for an underpaid job because he likes keeping students ignorant. These educators do everything to make sure that the next generation is as well prepared as possible and we all blame them.

Maybe we should take a look at how prepared or UNprepared children are when entering schools. The number of tasks of a teacher are getting larger every day. These days, they have to raise students, educate them, activate them, prepare them for work, intagrate more practical lessons, … Where does it end? You see more and more that both the parents have to work to generate enough money. This is why they spend less time in raising their children and preparing them for schools. So the children go totally unprepared to school and have to learn everything all at once. Do you still wonder why they achieve bad results?

Now to get back to the question: ‘Why do we blame teachers?’ I think the awnser is easy, to protect ourselfs. When you accuse someone else, nobody thinks of blaming you. In my opinion our society is responsible for the problems with the educational level of our children and teachers are just an easy target to blame so we don’t feel guilty ourselves. What do you think? Well, I feel that we should appreciate their efforts. They try to fix the future economy  that we are destroying and instead of praising their effords, we accuse them. Don’t you agree?

So I think it is about time that we start showing our appreciation to teachers, and when is a better time to start doing so than on teacher appreciation day? let us all express our appreciation and do something nice for them.

Schools helping for an energy efficient future

Filed under: Teacher Appreciation,Teachers in the US — admin @ 9:07 am

The subject of green behaviour is more and more integrated in our daily lives. We are starting to know that it is important for us and especially for our children so of course schools cannot stay behind. This is the reason why the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System started the Rossview Elementary School in the United States. The special aspect of this elementary is that it’s the first green school in the US.

Not only the building is energy efficient but the school has also started a student-led recycling team. In this way they try to convince the parents and others to follow the example of their children and participate. Furthermore you have a ‘green champion’ who is the green leader of the class and helps them towards an energy efficient consumption.

But this is not the only importance for the school. Teachers want to help each child by talking to them individually or in small groups so they can learn and understand everything on their own level. The basics of the school are Respect, and this involves respect towards the teachers as for the environment; Effort; Attitude; Coorporation, in order to reach their goals; and Honesty, they want to make the children to feel responsible for their actions. When you combine these 5 basics, you get the acronym R.E.A.C.H. Hopefully they can reach a greener future.

In the meanwhile, The US green building council is supporting the initiative. On the website http://www.greenschoolbuildings.org they give tips to create a healthy environment to support learning while saving energy, resources and money.
