Filed under: Teachers,Teachers in Asia — admin @ 3:57 am

Teacher’s Appreciation will be up in no more than 4 weeks now. It is time for us talk about what it really means to be a teacher. For some people, teaching has always been a vocation. For others, however, the wonderland of education was a late discovery. What is sure is that teaching is unique and it doesn’t feel like anything else. Another fact is that teaching is hard: it requires a lot of particular skills, the ability to adapt to everything and everyone and the will to compromise for pupils. See below our selection of tips to excel at work.

•    Be good at explaining things: Teaching requires a lot of patience. Explaining will be your man activity and you have to be sure that people gets you.

•    Always keep your cool: Children and teenagers of all ages tend to be provocative sometimes. For most students, irritating you is usually a good way for them to put you to the test.

•    Set your rules and stick to it: It is important to show transparence in your class, especially when it come to grades. Explain how you proceed from the beginning, this way, nobody will have the opportunity to question your methods.

•    Be fair: It is sometimes very difficult to differentiate the work of a student and the student himself. Don’t forget that the pupils’ personalities are not at stake during a lesson and that everyone is to be treated equally.

•    Master the content you teach: being credible is essential for a teacher. He/she has to remain a model for their students. That is why proving you actually know what you are talking about is a great part of your prep work.

•    Manage your time: nothing is worse than a teacher that sidetracks from the actual subject of the class. Remain concise and control the time that has been given to you. This way, you will keep your students concentrated and interested.

•    Be rewarding: students need to be pushed, and they also need to know when they are doing great or not. Take the time to compliment when necessary.

•    Be entertaining: it has been proved that humor is a very good way to get people’s attention. Students will stay focused if they are entertained. Be passionate!

•    Communicate: if you happen to have problems with one of your student, a parent or a colleague, just talk it out. Isn’t it the best way to arrange work things out?

•    Chose the right age range to teach to: finally, you have to be comfortable with your students. If you are not good with children, for instance, don’t teach in elementary schools.

Teacher’s Appreciation Day: a Postcard from China

Filed under: Teacher Appreciation Day,Teachers in Asia — admin @ 9:58 am

Everyday, we hear more about China. This country has always had its own particular culture, full of symbolism and values. Nowadays, China has to deal with a great influence of the Western world which is mainly due to the development of new technologies and global media (like Internet). Consequently, China has been invaded by famous holidays coming from our countries such as Halloween, Valentine’s Day or even Christmas.

However, Teacher’s Appreciation Day is not one of these recently imported holidays. It is a very important celebration for the Chinese population, and it has its long way to go.
Indeed, Teacher’s Appreciation Day was initiated in the 1930s by a group of China’s most esteemed professors. At the time, in the “Manifesto on Teacher’s day”, these professors detailed the main goals they wanted to accentuate: improve living conditions of Chinese teachers, as for their security and qualities. At the end of the 1930s, Chinese Ministry of Education decided to officially declare August 27 as Teacher’s Day. This date was chosen because it is the birthday of Confucius, great philosopher and teacher that initiated the basic principles of today’s Chinese educating system: i.e. “educate all without discrimination and teach according to the abilities of one’s students”.

In the mid-1980s, the reasons to celebrate teaching became more basic and, in some way, more concrete. Indeed, at this moment, Chinese government decided to reinforce the spirit of this holiday to encourage the society to respect teachers, teachers who were then severely underpaid. 30 years later, the country’s 10 million teachers still wait for the same improvements to be able to finally work in good conditions.

However, even if the Chinese educating system is still a little irregular in terms of results and resources, it has made great progresses during the last decade. China managed to provide higher-learning education for the country’s youth and growing investment in education by governments at all levels. The next challenge is now to give priority to education, strive for a better environment for building the ranks of teachers, safeguard the legitimate interests and rights of teachers and raise again the social status of teachers.

Furthermore, since the population’s getting richer everyday in some regions of the country, a new controversy aroused after last Teacher’s Day. The practice of sending luxurious gifts or envelopes of money to express gratitude to teachers has already been reported by the press. Critics mainly worried that these luxurious gifts would influence student’s results in class but teachers hurried right away to assure the media that they will always keep on treating their students fairly, whatever their present is on Teacher’s Day.
