What Sustains our Teachers during These Times

What Sustains our Teachers during These Times

Have you ever heard verbally that a teacher got really so tired with his or her profession? Did you hear someone frankly saying that he or she is quitting becoming a teacher because their students are extremely mischievous?

So far, in my years of existence where I am surrounded with teachers at home, in my community, and in my circle of community, I never get to hear teachers who professionally teach got to a point where they quit and stop teaching. I agree what my sibling told me. Yes, “teaching is not just a profession. It is a lifestyle. You don’t just teach just because you learned in for four years in college. You teach because it’s what you are actually passionate about.”

In your opinion, why do teachers keep on coming to work? When it comes to finances, their salary is not really that enormous compared to other earning professionals related to business or financing.

A certain blogger has actually pondered this question as well. What sustains our teachers during these times? Well, she actually had an informal survey in Facebook and asked the teachers that she knew concerning the issue. Most responses were wrapped up into three reasons:

  1. They love working with kids,
  2. They respect and appreciate their colleagues, and
  3. They embrace the intellectual rigor and creativity that their work demands.

Quoting what the blogger posted, a respondent named Diana said that laughter keeps her going. “Surely somewhere it has been written, ‘Teachers, love the children more than you love the personal money you spend on hand sanitizer, tissues, paperbacks, writers’ notebooks, and writing utensils for them; teachers, love the children more than you love a clean house, a free weeknight, a calm Sunday afternoon, and a leisurely lunch; teachers, love the children more than you hate wasteful meetings, mindless paperwork, and pointless bureaucracy; teachers love the children more than you dread the faltering economy, the angry taxpayer, and personal bankruptcy. Perhaps I exaggerate.” She has been a teacher in the Middle School for a few years already.

Isn’t this very inspiring? That’s why, it is way too impossible not to show appreciation to the teachers on teacher appreciation day 2011. There are so many ways we can show our gratitude towards them. We can write teacher appreciation poems, make or buy teacher appreciation gifts, or even just a simple greeting through cards and social media sites make it possible. With all their effort not to give up and choose to sustain in their career, I think they deserve all praise.

Give Love on Teacher Appreciation Day

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Teacher Appreciation Day is one of the best days among teachers, as far as celebrations are concerned. During Christmas or Valentines Day, usually the teachers are the ones who give gifts to their loved ones. But during their day, particularly this teacher appreciation week 2011, it always becomes a day where they are not the ones who will be giving so much anymore. This will be the day where they will in fact receive more.

That’s why we give gifts of love during their most special day. To become more romantic, poems are suitable gift ideas given by older students and adults. The following poems below are very simple yet heart-warming. Giving these poems makes the perfect impression for an expressed appreciation.

Sonnet for An Unforgettable Teacher

(Teacher’s name),
When I began your class I think I knew
The kind of challenges you’d make me face.
You gave me motivation to pursue
The best, and to reject the commonplace.
Your thinking really opened up my mind.
With wisdom, style and grace, you made me see,
That what I’d choose to seek, I’d surely find;
You shook me out of my complacency.
I thank you now for everything you’ve done;
What you have taught me I will not outgrow.
Your kind attention touched my mind and heart;
In many ways that you will never know.
I will remember you my whole life through;
I wish that all my teachers were like you.

The Best Teachers

Teachers open up young minds,
showing them the wonders of the intellect
and the miracle
of being able to think for themselves.
A teacher exercises
the mental muscles of students,
stretching and strengthening,
so they can make challenging decisions,
find their way in the world,
and become independent.
The best teachers care enough
To gently push and prod students
to do their best
and fulfill their potential.
You are one of those.
Thank you.

Funny Experiences Shared for Teacher Appreciation Day 2011

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

Did you celebrate Teacher Appreciation Day 2011 already in your country? Recently, the Philippines celebrated its Teacher’s Day and it was generally a success. Most students gave personalized gifts they made and bought to be given to their favorite teachers. Some parents also get to participate in the celebration by personally giving those gifts or giving them treats. It was a remarkable day for teachers to be recognized in such manner.

Now the part of the school is actually to implement programs to show teacher appreciation. And as part of the program, funny experiences among teachers may be considered.

The following stories below are few of the experiences a typical teacher encounters. Take time to read it; you probably have your funny experiences too that you can share within the program if you are a teacher.

I was substituting in my own son’s kindergarten classroom, and it happened to be his birthday. He told one of the children, and she asked me, “Is it really his birthday?” I replied, “Yes, he was born six years ago today.” The little girl looked at me in amazement. “You mean he was BORN on his BIRTHDAY? What a lucky boy!”

(I was substituting a 2nd grade class and the kids were working on their math workbooks. A little girl came up to me and said she didn’t understand a page that said to write an addition and subtraction story problem. I asked her “What is a story problem?” She hesitated a second and then said “It’s when something bad happens in a story.” I smiled and told her it was the best answer I had heard in months.

In my first year in the business of substituting I found myself in an 8th grade US History class. The students sensed my “newness” and let me have it, or so they thought. One boy walked to the window, opened it and threw his book out. The class roared, waiting for a response. I walked toward the window and the boy; he jumped out the window. A quick response of shutting the window and asking the class to carry on with the assignment worked in heading off problems. I then sent a note to the office and they handled the situation. I walked out of school that day and wondered if I’d be back. “I really like elementary school!” The secret is to keep your sense of humor.

One of my first experiences in subbing was quite humorous (for me anyway). This was a 10th grade math class. I usually just stand in the back and talk with students. While waiting for the bell to ring, a young man approached me. He was a student in the class. He was very nice and very charming. Just as the bell was ringing, he asked me out on a date, not knowing I was the Sub. I just smiled and headed for the front of the classroom. I looked directly at him while I said, “Hi my name is Mrs. Wilson, and I’m your substitute teacher.” His face turned bright red and never looked at me again. Needless to say, he was very quiet and well behaved after that!

A Salute for Teacher Appreciation Day

Monday, October 24th, 2011

“Teachers for Gender Equality.” – the October 5, 2011 WTD or World Teachers’ Day Theme.

Today, a salute to all teachers that celebrates Teacher Appreciation Day! Primarily in the Philippines, teachers and students are busy commemorating this special day. WTD or World Teachers’ Day is observed every 5th day of October yearly, in which the date celebrates the 1996 signing of the United Nations Educational, Cultural, and Scientific Organization or International Labor Organization Recommendation relating to the teachers status of Teachers.

There are lots of events occur not only in the Philippines but so as to other places around the world. For certain, programs to honor and awarding of teachers in general are not missing out, for they have made special contribution in education to a particular institution or community.

Since September 4 this year, there was a month-long campaign culmination in teachers appreciation day with “My Teacher, My Hero” theme; and the theme highlighted the extraordinary role of a teacher, the service, and the loyalty each has played in guiding families, in growth of communities, and the building of nation.

Recently, the ACT or Alliance of Concerned Teachers in the country led teachers a nationwide campaign aim to encourage the country’s verdict and the policy makers to develop the public school teachers’ economic condition. Last Oct. 1, 2011, Synergeia Foundation was organizing a community walk as well as arts and crafts program to honor the teachers. Teachers were presented by schools nationwide with teacher appreciation gifts, thank-you cards, and orchid corsages. –source: Manila Bulletin Philippines.

Recollecting the days of enlightenment and happiness on Teachers day, one can realize the years along the line how important those times were. The small moment inside the classroom gathering respect from one another- from teacher to students, and vice versa is a true compassion.

So if you value those days, it is time to express your thank you to your teacher fro their noble profession. Being students next to parents, teachers are important as how important parents are to you. The teachers have been the guidance and the helper for you and your classmates to enable you all to make something worthy and successful in your lives.

Apart from material things and/ or teacher appreciation gifts, there is anything that you could more specially offer to your teachers which is a genuine fulfillment – to see you or the former students of them as successful young professionals, exemplifying the values and the principles they have taught and instilled in the students, whereas selflessly give time to serve their community, their country, and fellow people.

Teachers Being the Shapers of the World

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

Among the greatest of all services that can be rendered by men to Almighty God, is the education and training of children, so that they can foster by grace in the way of salvation, growing like pearls of divine bounty in the shell of education and will be one day the jewel in the crown of abiding glory.

As far as Teacher Day is concerned, it was often said that teaching was the worse profession a person could take. Some people just prefer business or communicative professions, but definitely not teaching. Teachers are the most “abused” kind of profession since not everybody has the passion to take it. Just as Henry Von Dyke quoted, do not enter the teaching profession unless you love it. It is, in fact, the worst paid and the best rewarded of vocations.

Being a teacher is honestly not an easy task. You have to have excellence coupled with equity and social justice. In this world filled with unfairness and prejudice? Standing for the sake of the good is not an easy commission.

According to the writers of the “Role of Teacher in a School”, teachers You need to achieve the objective of excellence coupled with equity and social justice by way of imparting quality education to all students without any discrimination between cast, creed, sex, religion and race so that they become physically fit, mentally alert, emotionally balanced and spiritually sound. Teachers are required to understand the need of every child for material education, education for becoming good human being and for divine education so that they can face the realities of life in the new millennium.

Teachers should even be promoting patriotism and education for national integration as well. Quite a task, isn’t it? Their foremost duty, added by the source, is to provide education in such a way so that the students can live and learn together and develop their full potentials.

Moreover, they also need to have international understanding, good quality modern education, and reasonable level of competence in three languages. It is definitely not a very easy work for teachers. But you know, there are those who really disregard the difficulties of a teacher’s responsibility and extend their passion for teaching and for the children’s sake! Now that is a responsibility worth for such appreciation!

Fun at Kindergarten

On a special Teacher’s Day, a kindergarten teacher was receiving Teacher Day gifts. The Florist’s son handed her a gift. She shook it and held it over her head, and said, “I bet I know what it is..some flowers.” “That’s right!” said the boy. “But how did you know?” “Just a wild guess,” she said.

The next pupil was the candy storeowner’s daughter. The teacher held her gift overhead, shook it, and said, “I bet I can guess what it is…a box of candy.” “That’s right! But how did you know?” asked the girl. “Just a lucky guess,” said the teacher.

The next gift was from the liquor storeowner’s son. The teacher held it over her head but it was leaking. She touched a drop of the leakage with her finger and tasted it. “Is it wine?” she asked. “No,” the boy replied. The teacher repeated the process, touching another drop of the leakage to her tongue.

“Is it champagne?” she asked. “No,” the boy replied. The teacher then said, “I give up, what it is?” The boy replied, “A puppy!”
