U.S. Teacher’s freedom of expression in Public Education

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

Civil rights applied to public education teachers have evolved trough history. Before 1969, any of Amendments to the United States Constitution were not applied to students or teachers in the public schools and appreciation society has to teachers was showed applying -Loco parentis. This Latin expression means that teachers had the authority and duty to guide, correct, and punish a child.

However, in U.S. Supreme Court Justice Abe Fortas words -First Amendment rights, applied in light of the special characteristics of the school environment, are available to teachers and students. It can hardly be argued that either students or teachers shed their constitutional rights to speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate .

In base to First Amendment, teachers must have the right to freedom of expression and must have the chance to teach and impart knowledge in the way they think is more appropriate. Any teacher day after day, must have in mind that anything said in school environment can influence students to act in one way or another.

However, even famous teachers must respect others’ rights by respecting their own convictions and religion believes. About religion, any teacher in public school may not lead students in prayer, the recitation of scripture, or any other religious exercise . However, the Supreme Court has also clearly recognized that the study of the Bible and comparative religion in the public school classroom is constitutional because education it is no complete with a complete comparative study of history of religion.

President Obama: -Money without reform will not fix the problem about education system

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

President Obama talked about U.S education system and its problems on -Today NBC’s show on Monday, september 27. In his opinion U.S. students falling in world rankings in math and science are “a sign of long-term decline” that shows the need of a deep reform of education system and teachers appreciation will be an important point on it.

While in the past students from Unites States were ranked at the highest positions, nowadays the United States now ranks 21st in science and 25th in math. In Obama’s words “There are a lot of contributing factors. But part of the challenge, I think, for the entire country is to understand that how well we do economically, whether jobs are created here, high-end jobs to support families and support the future of the American people, is going to depend on whether or not we can do something about these schools.”

When many people is claiming to increase money that country spends on education even in teacher’s day, President says “Money plays a factor, and obviously, there are some schools where money plays a big factor — they don’t have up-to-date textbooks, they don’t have computers in the classroom — so those who say money makes no difference are wrong. On the other hand, money without reform will not fix the problem, and what we’ve got to do is combine a very vigorous reform agenda that increases standards, helps make sure that we’ve got the best possible teachers inside the classroom, makes sure that we’re clearing away some of the bureaucratic underbrush that is preventing kids from learning. We’ve got to combine that with deploying resources effectively,”

President Obama showed his appreciation for teachers: they are “the single-most important ingredient in the classroom.” and his administration is focusing in training 10,000 teachers in math and science fields. Obama said many current teachers “are doing heroic jobs”.
