Teacher’s Appreciation Day: a Postcard from China

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

Everyday, we hear more about China. This country has always had its own particular culture, full of symbolism and values. Nowadays, China has to deal with a great influence of the Western world which is mainly due to the development of new technologies and global media (like Internet). Consequently, China has been invaded by famous holidays coming from our countries such as Halloween, Valentine’s Day or even Christmas.

However, Teacher’s Appreciation Day is not one of these recently imported holidays. It is a very important celebration for the Chinese population, and it has its long way to go.
Indeed, Teacher’s Appreciation Day was initiated in the 1930s by a group of China’s most esteemed professors. At the time, in the -Manifesto on Teacher’s day, these professors detailed the main goals they wanted to accentuate: improve living conditions of Chinese teachers, as for their security and qualities. At the end of the 1930s, Chinese Ministry of Education decided to officially declare August 27 as Teacher’s Day. This date was chosen because it is the birthday of Confucius, great philosopher and teacher that initiated the basic principles of today’s Chinese educating system: i.e. -educate all without discrimination and teach according to the abilities of one’s students.

In the mid-1980s, the reasons to celebrate teaching became more basic and, in some way, more concrete. Indeed, at this moment, Chinese government decided to reinforce the spirit of this holiday to encourage the society to respect teachers, teachers who were then severely underpaid. 30 years later, the country’s 10 million teachers still wait for the same improvements to be able to finally work in good conditions.

However, even if the Chinese educating system is still a little irregular in terms of results and resources, it has made great progresses during the last decade. China managed to provide higher-learning education for the country’s youth and growing investment in education by governments at all levels. The next challenge is now to give priority to education, strive for a better environment for building the ranks of teachers, safeguard the legitimate interests and rights of teachers and raise again the social status of teachers.

Furthermore, since the population’s getting richer everyday in some regions of the country, a new controversy aroused after last Teacher’s Day. The practice of sending luxurious gifts or envelopes of money to express gratitude to teachers has already been reported by the press. Critics mainly worried that these luxurious gifts would influence student’s results in class but teachers hurried right away to assure the media that they will always keep on treating their students fairly, whatever their present is on Teacher’s Day.

The origins of Teacher’s Appreciation Day

Class

The famous day of celebration for teachers and education in general has been an important part of schools’ life for decades. But, for some of you who wonder how it started, here is the -genesis of Teacher’s Appreciation Day.

US Teacher’s Appreciation Day

It all began in 1944, in Arkansas, when the teacher Mattye Whyte Woodridge thought of a new way to thank teachers for their commitment. That was when she became to get in touch with politicians and educational leaders in order to establish one precise day recognizing the work of teachers. A few years later, in 1953, Eleanor Roosevelt persuaded the 81st Congress to implement for the first time a Teacher’s Appreciation Day.

In the 1980s, Teacher’s Appreciation Day became the brainchild of the National Education Association (NEA), the largest employee organization in Education existing since then. Indeed, it gathers no less than 2.8 million elementary and secondary teachers, higher education faculty, education support professionals, schools administrators, retired educators and students preparing to become teachers. In 1980, responding to NEA’s demand, Congress declared that the first Tuesday of March of each year would be Teacher’s Appreciation Day in the USA. This means that the actual date varies from year to year -in Massachussets, however, Teachers are celebrated on the first Sunday of June-.

World Teacher’s Appreciation Day

In 1994, United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designated October 4 as World Teacher’s Appreciation Day. Yet, the actual date changes according to the country. In fact, this date usually reflects a specific aspect of the own History of the country because it is important that people recognize their own culture so they can commit.

In Bolivia for instance, -Día del Maestro occurs on June 6. This date is the birthday of a famous Bolivian educador named Modesto Omiste tinajeros. This teacher and politician initiated the first public schools in Bolivian and made accessible education for all.

In Taiwan, Teacher’s Appreciation Day is also full of national symbolism. Celebrated on September 28, it is the birthday of the famous philosopher Confucius whose philosophy emphasized individual morality, correctness of social relationships, justice and sincerity.

At last, the most important isn’t it to celebrate Teacher’s Appreciation Day in 2010 wherever you live or wherever you’re from?

Teacher’s Appreciation Day in Afghanistan: A lesson about Hope

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

The beauty of teaching is celebrated all over the globe, in all kind of regions and in all type of languages. Afghanistan is one of those places.

Every year, on May 24th, even if schools are on leave, students and teachers all rush in to celebrate. People bring food, cookies and, most of all, presents. Special presentations and programs are also scheduled to please educators, teachers and families.

Teacher’s day is an occasion to draw the attention of the commitment teachers have always shown by trying providing quality education for all in such a context of doubt and insecurity. With about 4 million students in the country, Afghan teachers are now the symbol of a better future for all a new generation that has been growing in fear since the 1970s.

However, there are still significant obstacles to education in Afghanistan. For instance, Afghan teachers get the lowest salary in the world, accounting only about 6 % of domestic budget (100 USD). Furthermore, the government fails to pay most of them when times are unsteady, which usually happens in such a sensitive zone.

Given the national geography, many people face difficulties getting educated. Distance education would be possible thanks to the implementation of radio and TV programs in the most remote areas. Indeed, the increasing importance of Information and Communication technologies requires a big investment that the government can not afford at this moment.

Thanks to the famous UN agency of the UNESCO, things have changed a lot during the last few years. A series of measures have been implemented during the last few years to improve teaching conditions all over the country.

UNESCO began by supporting the ministries in designing and implementing viable educational policies in order to upgrade training, recruitment and working conditions.

At the end of the day, Teacher’s day in conflicted countries is becoming a symbol of all the values teaching is about, reminding us that school makes us what we are. Now we ought to hope that the Afghan public administration follows this beautiful example of solidarity and perseverance to give access to education to all the Afghan children and finally maintain peace.
