How many times do we wonder how different we would be without the knowledge that we acquire over the years and how different our life opportunities would be? Although it is not all down to our time at school and at university, a great part of it is and it´s time to celebrate our most memorable teachers. Teaching as a profession is not always easy, the subjects are more or less of interest to students and they can be more or less cooperative in class. Hence, it is all the more important that they teach in such a way to arouse our interest and make us learn, one of the most important things in life!
Teacher appreciation week from the 3-7th May 2010 is celebrated worldwide by schools and universities alike. Students come up with really inventive gifts such as t-shirts, teacher awards that resemble Oscars but home-made. Not only do normal students celebrate but celebrities join in on the fun!
-Two-time oscar winner Hilary Swank tells us about Mr Selleriet at Happy Valley Elementary School in Bellingham, Washington. He gave her her first acting job and inspired her to continue acting.
-“My high school English teacher, who for some reason assigned me the role of Portia in The Merchant of Venice when we read it aloud in class—it was the first time I’d ever done anything remotely like acting, and I thought, hmmmmm…”—Megan Mullally, actress, “Will and Grace”
- “…my elementary school sixth-grade teacher, Mr. Powers. He had a way of connecting with his students and not being judgmental. I also liked the fact that we would have ‘Subway’ days where we’d order Subway sandwiches and eat them in class around lunchtime! You know, as a kid, things like that mean something…”—Michelle Williams, vocalist, former member of Grammy Award-winning trio Destiny’s Child

– “Ms. Mieses taught me the importance of perseverance and discipline one must have in order to obtain results that will bring you happiness and success.”—Zoe Saldana, TV and film actress
Actors get more awards than they deserve. We are lucky enough to do a job we love in a public way so we get public acclaim. But the nature of our job is miniscule in importance next to teaching. If there’s any hope for this country, it’s with you and how you educate the children. It is the most important job, bar none.’-Jeremy Irons- actor

-Having set up my own successful make-up school, teaching is something I feel exceptionally passionate about.  I always keep in contact with my students and love creating a special bond with them and watching them grow.  Teachers are a wonderful breed and certainly aren’t recognised enough – let’s give something back and say thank-you. Mrs Marani was my favourite teacher because she was like my grandma – she taught me everything, was so kind, everyone adored her and it was great when she became headmistress.”-Jemma kidd- model
After Secondary school I moved onto Elliot Clarke Drama School in Liverpool which has now sadly closed, but I never forgot my teacher Miss Ashton. She encouraged me to go to the audition for Atomic Kitten. I hated auditions – I still do, but I have a lot to thank her for. Sadly I have lost contact with her now – it would be great to see her again!’ Liz McLaron- singer from Atomic Kitten
Teachers make a difference in our lives, so it´s all the more important to celebrate them during teacher appreciation week 2010!
